What is Disordered Eating ?
Disordered eating refers to eating behaviours that are unhealthy. It means changes in eating patterns that are detrimental to health. For instance, dieting, restrictive eating, self-induced vomiting, or binge eating.
Symptoms of Disordered Eating?
People with disordered eating may experience two or more of the following:
• Changes in weight (i.e., weight gain or weight loss).
• Changes in eating patterns (i.e., eating too much or eating too little).
• Changes in bowel habits.
• Fatigue.
• Accelerated or decelerated blood sugar
• Changes in menstrual regularity (for females)
• Frequent preoccupation with weight
• Frequent exercise to maintain a specific weight
• Withdrawal from social eating activities
• Using drugs to cause eaten food to be vomited
Causes of Disordered Eating
There is no known cause of disordered eating. However, some researchers claim that some factors may play a big role in disordered eating, including biological, social, and psychological factors.
How can people with eating disorders be helped?
Psychological interventions such as psychoeducation, cognitive behavioural therapy, or acceptance and commitment therapy.
Lifestyle modification such as guided nutrition control by a dietician/nutritionist.
